Fate has smiled on me ... I had the great pleasure of meeting Madeleine. Lucky circumstances allowed me to attend her show last night in Philly. However the best news is...... SHE WILL BE MAKING A NEW CD NEXT YEAR!! YEEEAAAA!!!
On to the show;
Small, intimate venue {I was seated 20 ft from her}, she was accompanied by William Galison
{guitar, some sort of clarinet thing and awesome harmonicas} her sassy, jaunty, gay paree
persona was in full bloom. Knocked me out when she sang {in french} a cover of Josephine
Baker's "J'ai Deux Amours", I think that translates to "I have two loves" ...
closed my eyes and felt like I was sitting in a french sidewalk cafe in 1927.
Her version is much better than Josephine's!
Regarding their collaboration, the chemistry between William and Madeleine is
palpable. They were very tight on most of the songs ... exceptions being a love
song, "Waking Up with You", written by William that Madi hadn't mastered yet.
Same with {her first ever performance} of Stevie Wonders "Heaven Help Us All"...
She's good, but doesn't have that "soul" thing down yet. William compliments her
exceptionally well, they are simply fantastic ...
The only songs from the first CD were "Dreamland" and "Walkin' after Midnight".
Eveything else was new material, some jazz, lots of "bluesy" type tunes
{similar to the stlye of her rendition of "Muddy Waters"} and some bouncy ones
similar to "Was I " .
If they put all the songs they sang last night on the new CD, it will be at least
twice as good as the first one!!! All in all, a very memorable experience!!
Well worth losing sleep over!
Impressions... She is a delightful performer and person. Affable, humorous, humble,
yet very appreciative of her audience.
William is either very good or very good at improvising! I think he's very
good and is a great asset... hope they play together for a very long time!
