The return of the recluse
The last time Peyroux played Toronto, she appeared at a small downtown club. Tomorrow, the jazzy, bluesy, 32-year-old chanteuse who sounds far more like Billie Holiday than Jones, is taking the stage at a far more prestigious venue: Massey Hall. In a recent interview, Peyroux - she's now based in Brooklyn, N.Y., after living many years abroad - said she enjoys touring the United States more than she once did. "In a way, American audiences are more challenging than European. I'm playing American music back to Americans. They don't generally have the same passion for it, but it's beautiful and because of the social content, there's a potentially deeper understanding.""

Careless Love is WFUV's ""CD of the Month"" in September
MADELEINE PEYROUX A vocalist who emerged in the mid-90's from singing in the New Orleans streets, Ms. Peyroux could inhabit Billie Holiday and Edith Piaf, doing the tragic, pinched-voice thing perfectly. She still can and does — that little voice remains somehow central to her — but on ""Careless Love,"" her first album in eight years, she enlarges and updates the repertory, wading into the Elliott Smith and Jesse Harris catalogs.
