- Madeleine Peyroux, Half the Perfect World (* * * 1/2)
Peyroux's gentle, understated interpretations of love songs (by the likes of Leonard Cohen, Johnny Mercer and Joni Mitchell) and sophisticated arrangements resonate with emotion. On her own I'm All Right, she wryly notes after a messy breakup, "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but tears don’t leave any scars." The wistful River with k.d. lang, the erotic Blue Alert and the moody title track are all delights.
